Many of our programs are made possible through a partnership with After School Matters. Right now, those programs serve 65 participants from all areas of Chicago. Teens learn about bicycle maintenance and repair, safe riding and cycling for sport, exercise and transportation. These programs go on rides to many different destinations, complete a resume and have the opportunity to earn a bike, bike parts, accessories and gear. In addition to an ASM stipend, Program benefits include: exposure to a professional bicycle workshop, professional development that includes financial counseling, health and wellness education, public presentation experience, map reading and urban navigation, safe cycling instruction, greater transportation options, and freedom of travel throughout Chicago. Teens that successfully complete the program are eligible for employment with the Chicago Park District and West Town Bikes including Jr. Bicycling Ambassadors with the Chicago Department of Transportation, Jr. Camp Counselors with the Chicago Park District, Assistant Instructors for elementary school bike programs with West Town Bikes, and entry level bike builder and mechanic positions at Ciclo Urbano and other are bike shops.
